Extended information

Area code 906 is the telephone area code for the entire Upper Peninsula of Michigan, including the following cities: Escanaba, Houghton, Iron Mountain, Ironwood, Ishpeming, Mackinac Island, Marquette, Menominee, Norway, and Sault Sainte Marie.

906 was created because part of northern Michigan was threatening to secede, either becoming part of Wisconsin, or create Superior, to be named after one of the Great Lakes. Despite dating from 1961, it is not expected to be exhausted until 2023.

It is, in terms of population, one of the smallest area codes in North America, with only about 320,000 people in the region served by 906. It was created as a split from 616 on Sunday, March 19, 1961, as a flash-cut, with no official permissive dialing period.
