Extended information

Area code 203 is a telephone area code that covers the southwestern part of Connecticut. The area code stretches from the state's western border, along its southern coast, to beyond the city of New Haven, and ends just south of Hartford. The rest of Connecticut is served by the 860 area code.

The CT Public Utility commission in August 1999 proposed an area code overlay for the 203 area code. Area code 475 will go into effect on December 12, 2009. Even though area code 475 will only overlay area code 203, all callers in Connecticut (including those in area code 860) will have to dial all calls with ten digits beginning on November 14, 2009
